The Beauty of Being a Lash Artist

We all have reasons why we do things. Careerwise, being a lash artist is an interesting and unique choice for where we invest our time, energy and years of our life. I know from personal experience it’s easy to get lost and burned out as a full time lash artist, wondering why we tirelessly work and perfect such a niche craft. On top of that, the majority of lash artists are self employed which brings on an entirely new set of challenges and feelings of loneliness in this ever growing industry. If this sounds like you, and you’re at the beginning of your lash journey or years down the line wondering your “why”, this is a message of encouragement for you.

It’s easy to feel like you are just a lash artist. Who knows the feeling when you’re around new people and someone asks “What do you do?” and you say “Oh, I do lashes!” and that dreaded wave of “is that good enough?” washes over you. We’ve all been there. But as lash artists, we know deep down we are way more than ”just a lash artist”. Being a lash artist is not for the faint of heart. It is a deeply demanding skill that takes years of training, practice, muscle memory and time to feel confident at. On top of all this, you are working with all types of different people and serving them in a very intimate way.

Here is your mindset shift. The job you get to do everyday is a rare and beautiful gift. When you take a client, you have a moment of their time, interrupted and peaceful. You are listening, speaking light into their life, touching, brushing, confidence boosting, beautifying and caring. Maybe seeing you is the highlight of their week. Maybe you are the kindest voice they’ve heard in a long time. Maybe having lashes changes the way they see themselves and they walk the world differently because of it. I have had clients tell me I am one of their closest confidants and dearest friends. You never know the difference you are making in people’s lives.

Here are some ways to feel refreshed and excited about your career when you are feeling burnt out.

1. Take a new course! You never know enough and with an industry that is constantly evolving, it’s exciting and challenging to expand your skill set and learn new ways to expand your knowledge and wow your clients.

2. Make each work day special! Get to work early, light new candles, throw on a cute outfit and some heels, pack a healthy lunch or rearrange and redecorate your space. Sometimes it’s the littlest of things that can make all the difference in our headspace.

Personally, from time to time I like to bake my clients a fresh batch of cookies or make them goodie bags to make their service a little more memorable and personal.

3. Make friends in the industry! The lash industry is fairly new to the beauty world making it an amazing place to grow and connect with some fabulous, like-minded men and women. Reach out to other artists in your local area or on instagram, and start friendships and conversations. Seek mentorship from artists you admire and encourage and cheer on newer artists that might look up to you. We are all in this together, and feeling a sense of community is a key to creating a space that you love and want to grow in.

You are part of a family here at LashboxLA. We are here to support you and love you whatever stage of your career you are in. Feel free to reach out to any of our trainers or brand ambassadors for questions, insight or just a “hey, let’s be friends!”, you are always welcome here.

Much love,
Maddi

Wow, what an inspiring and informative article Madison. I am your biggest fan.

You know, right now I work as an engineer, but after reading this, I think it might be time for me to follow my dream of becoming a lash artist!

Love,
Elliott
